While looking for a new mattress, there are many different considerations that a homeowner must take into account. However, one aspect that is often neglected or overlooked is the size of the mattress, leading to many cramped or uncomfortable nights. By keeping these considerations in mind you can help determine the mattress size needed for your specific needs.
Learn The Different Mattress Sizes Available
Traditionally, there are four mattress sizes; twin, full, queen and king. While there can be many differences between mattress brands as far as construction and quality are concerned, the mattress size will remain fairly consistent. Here is your primer for each mattress size:
- Twin – Running roughly 38″ wide by 75″ long, twin mattresses may be too small for some adults. Other than a crib-sized mattress, this is the smallest size you can get. However, Twin XL mattresses provide around 6″ more length to accommodate taller adults.
- Full – Creating a snug sleeping quarters for a couple, the full mattress is approximately 16″ wider than the twin mattress at 54″ wide by 75″ long. While this added room may be great for a single sleeper, it can be tough to make it work for two people. For joint sleepers, moving up in size may be the best idea.
- Queen – Measuring in at 60″ wide by 80″ long, queen mattresses are perfect for sleeping partners or individuals that need the extra space to sprawl at night. If you are considering sharing the bed with another individual, this is likely the bare minimum for mattress sizes that you should look at.
- King – The largest of the traditional mattress sizes, the king mattress measures 76″ wide by 80″ long. If you have pets or children that can’t bear to sleep alone and need a little extra space to accommodate them, this mattress size is perfect. However, if you need something with a little more length, the California king mattress provides 4″ of length but removes 4″ of width in comparison to the traditional king.
It is important to keep your bedroom dimensions in mind while determining the mattress size that is right for you. Even if you want a king size bed, it may not fit comfortably in your desired space, making a smaller bed your only option.
